German industry has urged the EU to assert itself confidently in its trade dispute with the US. "Europe must not allow itself to be blackmailed," said the President of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), Dieter Kempf, in Berlin Monday.
As one of the world's largest trading powers, Europe cannot leave any doubts that international trade conflicts have to be dealt with and solved within the framework of the World Trade Organization (WTO), he added.
President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström are traveling to the United States Wednesday for trade talks. US President Donald Trump most recently threatened to impose new tariffs on cars from Europe.
Kempf said it is essential to build a shared understanding on the basis of facts and win back trust. Juncker has to make clear that the US would harm itself with tariffs on motor vehicles and automotive parts, he added.
