Carmaker BMW will order the battery cells for its next generation of electric cars from the Chinese battery giant CATL. "We have just awarded a contract worth billions to the Chinese battery manufacturer CATL," CEO Harald Krüger told German financial daily "Handelsblatt." BMW formed a partnership with CATL at a very early stage and has also supported the company’s plans to build a factory in Europe.
"CATL is building a plant in Europe," Krüger added. The eastern German state of Thuringia has been discussed as a possible location for several weeks. The state’s economics minister, Wolfgang Tiefensee, a Social Democrat, recently confirmed that negotiations were underway to build the plant there.
BMW plans to continue working with other battery manufacturers, in addition to CATL. "We will continue our cooperation with Samsung," Krüger said. "We need several suppliers because we have 25 electric models in the pipeline up to 2025. In addition, we want to secure the long-term supply of the required raw materials."
