2017 Xinhua-Baltic International Shipping Centre Development

Hunan province, called Xiang for short, lies in the south of the middle Yangtze River valley, with its name meaning “south of the lake” as most of the province locates to the south of the Dongting Lake. It has an area of 211,800 square km, or 81,776 square miles. It is bounded by the provinces of Hubei province to the north, Jiangxi province to the east, Guangdong province to the southeast, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to the southwest, and by Guizhou province and Chongqing Municipality to the west. <br></br> Hunan boasts a long history and is one of the places where Chinese agricultural cultivation originated. According to archeological excavations and written records, there were human beings living here permanently over 8,000 years ago, surviving mainly on primitive agriculture and domestic animal rearing. <br></br> By the end of 2015, the number of permanent residents in Hunan reached 67.83 million, including an urban population of 34.52 million with the urbanization ratio at 50.89%, up by 1.61 percentage points from end-2014. The number of newborns was 918,000 in 2015 and the birth rate was 1.358%. <br></br> The province’s gross domestic production (GDP) stood at 2,904.72 billion yuan in 2015, up by 8.6% year on year. Calculated by permanent resident population, Hunan’s gross domestic production per capita was 42,968 yuan, up by 7.9% from 2014.

Hunan has a humid continental and subtropical monsoon climate. It has average annual sunshine of 1,300-1,800 hours, annual average temperature of 16℃-18℃, a frost-free period of 260 to 310 days, and a mean annual precipitation of 1,200-1,700 mm. Hunan boasts a long history and is one of the places where Chinese agricultural cultivation originated. According to archeological excavations and written records, there were human beings living here permanently over 8,000 years ago, surviving mainly on primitive agriculture and domestic animal rearing. Hunan appeared in the written history of China in around 350 BC, when under the emperors of the Zhou Dynasty it became part of the Chu Empire (Chu State). In 211 BC, after having unified China, Emperor Qinshihuang set up “Changsha Shire” here. In the Tang Dynasty, an administrative organization named “Hunan Observation Office” was set up. In the Song Dynasty, the Hunan Route was established. In the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, “Huguang Xingsheng (administrative province)” was set up. In the Qing Dynasty, “Hunan Province” came into being. Since the founding of the Republic of China and the subsequent People's Republic of China, Hunan has continued to exist as a province. Hunan governs Changsha, Zhuzhou, Xiangtan, Yueyang, Yiyang, Changde, Hengyang, Yongzhou, Loudi, Huaihua, Chenzhou, Shaoyang, Zhangjiajie prefecture-level cities, Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture of Tujia and Miao Nationalities, and 122 subordinated counties, county-level cities and districts. By the end of 2014, the number of permanent residents in Hunan reached 67.37 million, including an urban population of 33.2 million with the urbanization ratio at 49.28 percent, up by 1.32 percentage points from end-2013. The number of newborns was 908,000 in 2014 and the birth rate was 1.352%.
