Volkswagen's flagship brand sold more cars last month than ever before in the month of May, the carmaker said from its headquarters in the northern city of Wolfsburg on Thursday.
VW sold 539,700 vehicles in May 2018 - 5.1 per cent more than in May 2017.
"The production offensive with new cars like the Polo, Tiguan Allspace, Virtus and T-Roc has been well received by our customers," the head of the VW brand, Juergen Stackmann, said.
"It was the best May in the Volkswagen brand's history," he said.
VW's largest market by far, China, also saw a 4-per-cent rise in sales compared with the same month of 2017, accounting for 251,600 vehicle sales.
China now accounts for around half of VW sales.
