German companies are currently making slow progress with digitization because their order books are completely full, according to an assessment from the German digital industry association Bitkom. In a new representative study released on Wednesday, 32 percent of managers said the biggest obstacle they face with digitization is the lack of time in their everyday business, while 21 percent complained of a lack of resources. “Digitization will not come for free, however,” said Bitkom president Achim Berg.
“No one who is responsible for running a company can seriously say, ‘We have no money and no time for the future,’” said Berg. Companies in Germany’s so-called Mittelstand of small- and medium-sized firms in particular are dealing with full order books at the moment and doing good business, he added. “But the business world of tomorrow will be exclusively digital,” said Berg. And companies need to prepare for this even during the current economic boom.
