BEIJING, June 7 (Xinhua) -- China-Europe freight trains have transported 352,000 tonnes of cargo from east China’s Shandong Province to countries in Europe and Central Asia as of end-April, according to a report by China News Service on Wednesday.
So far, six cities in Shandong have opened eight freight train routes to Europe and Central Asia.
Freight trains are an alternative to the slow sea shipping or the expensive air transport. Currently, it takes around 15 days for a cargo train to carry goods from Shandong to Central Asia, compared with up to one month for truck transportation.
The freight rail routes promote the foreign trade between Shandong and countries in Europe and Central Asia, said Geng Lei, general manager of Shandong High-speed Logistics Group Co., Ltd. (Contributed by Ding Lei, dingle@xinhua.org, edited by Zhang Aifang, zhangaf@xinhua.org)
