Among the most competitive countries in the world, there is fierce competition for the top positions.
In the latest ranking, the Netherlands has overtaken Switzerland among the European countries while the United States is now in the top spot globally with a leap from fourth to first place.
Germany, on the other hand, has been on a downward trajectory for years, according to the 30th edition of the World Competitiveness Rankings, published by the IMD business school in Switzerland.
Germany fell from 6th place in 2014 to 15th place this year. The tax landscape is the main negative factor cited. Digital capabilities, the fight against tax evasion and environmental pollution are also in a worse state.
China climbed five places, overtaking Germany and finishing 13th, Austria also jumped from 25th to 18th place.
