Containers in the Port of Hamburg (Christian Charisius/dpa/archive)
Container turnover at the Port of Hamburg decreased 1.9 percent in the first three months of this year to 2.2 million standard containers (TEU).
Behind this lies an 18 percent decrease in the handling of empty containers, announced the Port of Hamburg’s marketing agency.
The Port recorded a slight increase in handling loaded container boxes of 0.7 percent to 1.9 million TEU. Shipping companies used their slot capacities primarily for loaded containers and could optimally utilize their ships with an almost balanced volume of import and export cargo shipments.
Container traffic with Hamburg’s most important trade partner China as well as hinterland traffic by train both rose upward by 4.5 percent and 4.1 percent, respectively.
Freight traffic decreased over the same time period. A total of 32.7 million tons of goods were handled, a 7.5 percent decrease compared to the same time period one year earlier. A sharp decrease of 18.2 percent in the handling of bulk goods to 10 million tons was primarily responsible for this.
