Chinese-built section of Algeria North-South Highway opens to traffic -- A 22-km section of Algeria North-South Highway built by a Chinese firm opened to traffic on Apr. 19. Built by China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), the stretch is part of a 53-km highway that links Chiffa to Berrouaghia, both in northern Algeria. Algeria's transport minister says the two-way six-lane highway is expected to be completed early next year. It is considered as the most challenging part of the North-South Highway, which is dubbed as Algeria's traffic artery. The section includes six tunnels and dozens of viaducts. The North-South Highway is some 3,000km long, running from the Mediterranean Sea to the hinterland of the Sahara. It's considered as a vital project for Algeria's economic development.
Indonesia, China agree to jointly build industrial zones outside Java -- China and Indonesia recently reached consensus on developing industrial zones outside the Java Island under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, according to a report from local Indonesian media. After a meeting between Indonesia’s Industrial Minister Airlangga Hartarto and Chinese ambassador to Indonesia Xiao Qian, they agreed to build industrial zones in North Sumatra, North Kalimantan and North Sulawesi, which is in line with the country’s plan to develop industrial zones outside Java Island.
Sri Lanka hopes to accelerate ongoing Chinese projects: PM -- Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has said his government will work with China to accelerate ongoing projects and attract more Chinese investment in order to promote economic and social development in the island country. In a recent discussion with Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Cheng Xueyuan, Wickremesinghe said Sri Lanka had always strongly supported the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative, the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka said on April 23. The prime minister added that his government attached great importance to mega-projects cooperation with China, especially the Hambantota Port, the Industrial Park in southern Sri Lanka and the Colombo Port City in the capital.
Winner for high-speed rail project in Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor expected in November -- Thailand is expected to find a private firm in November to build a high-speed rail linking three major airports between the Thai capital and the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). EEC Office Secretary General Kanit Saengsuphan said the private firm has to win a bidding to implement the high-speed rail linking Don Mueang airport in Bangkok with Suvarnabhumi airport in Samut Prakan province and U-Tapao airport in Rayong province as part of the EEC project, Thai government's official website published on April 19. After a meeting attended by Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, Deputy Prime Minister in charge of economy Somkid Jatusripitak and other officials on EEC on April 19, Kanit confirmed that preparations for Terms Of Reference will be finished in the next few weeks and the private sector will be given four month to bid for the high-speed rail, estimaed to cost 224.5 billion baht (about 7.24 billion U.S. dollars).
25 projects worth USD2 billion to settle in Taicang -- Taicang witnessed the signing of 25 projects worth 13 billion yuan (2 billion U.S. dollars) at the 2018 Taicang Investment Attraction Conference held in southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, one of China's three financial centers on April 24. The 25 projects involves intelligent equipment manufacturing, new materials, medical devices, logistics, headquarters economy, cultural tourism and other fields. Taicang has always sought development by innovation, such as building a hub for technological innovation, cultivating outstanding innovative enterprises, and attracting high-profile startup talents. Tianshun Group becomes an operator in Xinjiang International Land Port Area -- Xinjiang Tianshun Supply Chain Co Ltd signed a cooperative agreement with Xinjiang International Land Port Company on April 16. The signing ceremony took place in the UETD Building. Ma Chunlei, member of the standing committee of the Urumqi Economic and Technological Development Zone (Toutunhe district) and deputy director of the management committee of the Urumqi International Land Port Area, and Wang Puyu, president of Tianshun Group, signed the agreement. They both gave speeches at the signing ceremony. According to the agreement, Tianshun Group will cooperate with the park in projects involving supply chain and logistics.
