Croatia set for bridge contract with Chinese consortium: minister -- Croatia will sign a contract with a Chinese consortium on the construction of the Peljesac Bridge on April 23, Croatian Minister of Sea, Transport and Infrastructure Oleg Butkovic confirmed on Apr. 18. Butkovic told Xinhua that the construction of the bridge would begin immediately, despite the appeal submitted to court on Apr. 16 by the competitors, who attempted for the second time since January to challenge Croatian authority's decision of awarding the project to the Chinese bidder.   The Peljesac Bridge, with an estimated value of over 400 million euros (485 million U.S. dollars), is one of the most strategic infrastructure projects in Croatia. EU fund will cover 85 percent of the total cost. It is designed to be 55-meter high and 2.4 kilometer-long with four lanes, connecting the southernmost part of Croatia around Dubrovnik with the rest of the mainland.

Chinese-built electricity poles plant inaugurated in South Sudan -- The South Sudan government has launched a factory producing concrete poles that will facilitate an ambitious project done by a Chinese company to rehabilitate and expand the Power Distribution System in Juba, its capital. The Minister of Dams and Electricity, Dhieu Mathok, said that the factory, rented by Power China, will produce some 13,350 poles for the electricity distribution in the capital and other states.   The project falls under the Juba Power Distribution System Rehabilitation and Expansion Project, which was funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB). It comprises of five different lots like Rehabilitation of Diesel plant substation, Rehabilitation and Expansion of medium voltage network, low voltage network, and Rehabilitation and Expansion of street lighting and improvement of customer care.

China to build 525-MW hydropower station on Yangtze tributary -- China plans to build a 525-MW hydropower station on the Wujiang River, a tributary of the Yangtze River, in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality. The Baima project, the last of a cascade of hydropower stations on the section of the Wujiang River in Chongqing, has gotten the green light from the National Development and Reform Commission, China's state planning agency, the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform said on Apr. 16. The project, in Baima township of Wulong District, is expected to involve an investment of 10.2 billion yuan (1.6 billion U.S. dollars), it said. With a power-generating capacity of 525 MW, it is expected to generate 1.76 billion kwh of more than 5,000 local residents will be relocated to make room for the project.

Shanghai Electric to construct solar facility in Dubai -- Shanghai Electric Group signed an engineering procurement construction contract on Apr. 13 to build the world's largest concentrated solar power project in Dubai, marking the State-owned company's ambition to grow into a world leading brand. The 700 megawatt CSP project is the fourth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai. Upon completion, it will be the only CSP project to supply power 24 hours a day in the world. The project is scheduled to come online in 2020 when the World Expo will be held in Dubai. It is expected to contribute up to 7 percent of the city's total power output by 2020 and 75 percent in 2050. A consortium led by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, Saudi Arabia water and power projects developer ACWA Power and China's government-backed Silk Road Fund has invested about 3.86 billion U.S. dollars in the CSP project. Pakistan Neelum-Jhelum project to start operation: Chinese contractor -- The Neelum-Jhelum project, one of the largest hydropower stations in Pakistan, will see its first turbine generator officially start supplying electricity to the national grid on Apr. 20, said the Chinese contractor. The project, roughly 200 kilometers northeast of Islamabad, has four generators with a total capacity of 969 megawatts. The second generator will start trial operation this month, followed by the third and fourth units in the latter half of the year, according to China Gezhouba Group Co. Ltd. (CGGC), also the main builder of the Three Gorges project. Designed to generate 5.15 billion kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually, the project aims to ease power shortages in part of Pakistan and is estimated to generate a fiscal revenue of 45 billion rupees (442 million U.S. dollars) annually, said the Chinese construction giant.

Chinese firm says SGR project will not affect Kenya's wildlife heritage -- The Chinese firm extending Kenya's Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Kenya's Nairobi to Naivasha has said the project will not affect the health of the country's wildlife heritage and other ecological treasures along its corridor. Steve Zhao, the spokesperson for the Kenya SGR Head Office, said sound environmental regulations will be observed during the construction of Phase 2A of SGR which passes through a national park and other biodiversity hotspots. Zhao clarified that construction of the Super Bridge along Nairobi National Park that was previously opposed by environmental groups, was given a green light by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the environmental watchdog since it posed negligible threat to animals and plants. "We are committed to adhering to the recommendations set by KWS in efforts to offer minimal disruption to the flora and fauna in the national park," Zhao told Xinhua in a recent interview.

CPP starts flowline welding work in Harald project of Saudi Arabia -- CPP starts welding on the Flow Lines of Harald Gas Pipeline Project recently. The project is a key project of Saudi Aramco newly planned in Harald Oilfield. The flow lines being constructed by CPP4 include 11 oilfield gathering and transmission pipelines from 8 to 30 inches in diameter with a total length of 89 kilometers.

Ethiopia to commission Chinese-built pharmaceutical industrial park in Jun -- Ethiopia will commission Chinese-built Kilinto industrial park(KIP) which will host pharmaceutical companies in June, an Ethiopian official said on Apr. 12. Kilinto industrial park lying on 270 hectares of land is being constructed by China Tiesiju Civil Engineering Group Co., Ltd. (CTCEGCL) at a cost of 204 million U.S. dollars. The World Bank is wholly financing the construction of the industrial park through a loan scheme. KIP, when completed, will encompass 18 kms of asphalt roads, provision of basic social services, green spaces, warehouses, business centers and car parking space. Ethiopia is currently constructing or has commissioned 15 industrial parks as part of plan to turn the country into a light manufacturing hub in Africa by 2020.
