China’s UNCE wind bid of Dubai’s largest shopping mall project -- China United Engineering Co., Ltd. (UNEC) and Nakheel, a local property developer in Dubai, signed a 1.14 billion U.S. dollar contract on Nakheel’s Deira shopping center project, according to report from bhi.com.cn. Covering an area of 4.5 million square feet, the shopping center is designed to hold 1000 stores, cafe shops, restaurants and entertainment venues, with a 3.8 million square feet parking area and a retractable glass roof. The project will start construction in the first quarter of 2018 and will be finished in 2021.
Powerchina wins comprehensive reclamation development project in Malaysia -- Power Construction Corporation of China (Powerchina) has recently entered into an agreement with the Economic Development and Investment Authority of Sabah on a comprehensive reclamation development project in Semporna, Sabah, said a report from sina.com.cn. With an area of 42 acres and a total construction period of 48 months, the EPC project involves the design and construction of infrastructure including administrative and tourism centers, harbors and harbor facilities, luxury and comfort hotels, business and shopping centers and mosques.
S. Korea to invest in Iran's solar power plant project -- South Korea will invest in the construction of a solar power plant in Zarandieh county in central Iran, official IRNA news agency reported on Feb. 24. On the day, a South Korean delegation visited the solar power plant site in Markazi province, the official with the Zarandieh Governorate, Mohammad Ghanati, told IRNA. An area of 28 hectares has been allocated for the implementation of the project, Ghanati was quoted as saying. The Korean side will finance 44 million U.S. dollars, which amounts to 70 percent of the total investment, and the Iranian side will undertake the rest, he said. Major tunnel of HK-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge completed -- A bridge linking Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao has moved a step closer to official opening, with a major tunnel project fully completed on Feb. 24. The 2,741-meter-long Gongbei Tunnel is 21 meters high with an excavation area of 336.8 square meters, bigger than any other highway tunnel in the world, China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) said. The 55-kilometer Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, situated in the Lingdingyang waters of the Pearl River Estuary, will be the world's longest sea bridge. The two-way tunnel with six lanes in total, which has been built over five years, is the only passage connecting the main body of the bridge with Zhuhai, according to the company.
Malaysia signs Chinese firm for environmental protection initiative in major rail project -- Malaysia's Department of Wildlife and National Parks under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE), on Feb 27 signed a memorandum of agreement with China Communications Construction Company Ltd. (CCCC), the main contractor for the 688-kilometer East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), to tackle possible environmental issues caused by the project. According to the agreement, the CCCC will work together with NRE experts to take crucial measures to ensure the rail project complies with environmental requirements. The CCCC would build wildlife underpasses at 29 strategic locations to allow wildlife to move freely despite the railway line passing through and numerous elevated viaducts, with a possible length of 128 kilometers in total, will also be built so that wildlife can roam as they normally would and be protected.
AIIB approves 60 mln USD loan for Bangladesh power project -- The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank's (AIIB) has approved a loan of up to 60 million U.S. dollars for a power project in Bangladesh, according to a statement posted on the bank's website on Feb. 26. The approved debt financing will support the development of Bangladesh Bhola IPP, a greenfield 220-megawatt combined cycle power plant in Bhola island in the Barisal district of Bangladesh. The project is expected to increase power generation capacity in Bangladesh and help the country respond to power shortages, said the statement. Once complete, it said, the project will increase power generation by around 1,300 gigawatt hours annually.
Many big projects ready to begin in China -- A slew of big projects, with total investment of more than 10 trillion yuan (1.58 trillion U.S. dollars), are about to start in a number of Chinese provinces and regions this year, China Daily reported on Feb. 24. As local governments aim for growth quality and sustainability, most of these projects will be in strategic and emerging industries, such as high-end equipment manufacturing and information technology, as well as infrastructure construction related to transportation and energy.
Ukraine, EU to jointly finance new Silk Road transport corridor -- Ukraine and the European Union (EU) will jointly finance the "Go highway" project, which would establish a new transport corridor on the Silk Road, Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Volodymyr Omelyan said on Feb. 20. "The EU is ready to partially finance our 'Go highway' project that will connect the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea," Omelyan told reporters after meeting with Henrik Hololei, the European Commission's director-general for mobility and transport. Chinese firm to set up smartphone factory in Uganda -- The Government of Uganda has endorsed a Chinese firm, Xinlan Group in establishing a smartphones factory in Uganda. The plan to establish a cell phone factory in Uganda was hatched in July, 2017 when a government delegation that visited China asked Chinese authorities to give Uganda a comprehensive cyber-security solution, including technical capacity to monitor and curb increasing social media misuse. Once the project kicks off, a total of 5,000 Ugandans are expected to get jobs and the project will also help enhance access to internet in the country.
