GUANGZHOU, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- In the information era, media has played an irreplaceable role in enhancing people-to-people understanding and exchanges and contributing to the Belt and Road construction, said attendees at “The 21st Century Maritime Silk Road" Forum on International Communication and Chinese (Guangdong) Companies Going Global on Wednesday.
Since the Belt and Road Initiative was proposed in 2013, it has yielded fruitful results. During the period, media of countries have undertaken corresponding responsibilities and missions to promote the Belt and Road construction and practice the concept of “extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits”.
The effects of taking advantage of media to strengthen people-to-people understanding and recognition and deepen their friendship have been increasingly emerging. On the basis, media cooperation should be further strengthened. A multilayered and long-term media cooperation mechanism shall be built and improved. Media of countries along the Belt and Road and beyond should carry out high-level visits, personnel exchanges, content exchange, and co-hosting activities to comprehensively carry out and upgrade their cooperation and facilitate information flows, said Sun Shangwu, deputy editor-in-chief of China Daily.
As the bond and bridge, media shall undertake the historical mission and play a more positive role, said Zheng Bo, deputy editor-in-Chief of the Economic Daily.
Over the past four years, countries along the Belt and Road have constantly enhanced their trade cooperation with the improving trade environment. During the period from 2014 to 2016, trade volume between China and the Belt and Road countries exceeded 3 trillion U.S. dollars and China’s investments in the countries along the Belt and Road surpassed 50 billion U.S. dollars, said Zheng, adding that it is especially crucial to promote mutual understanding of the people of countries, while deepening economic and trade cooperation among the countries along the Belt and Road.
Chinese companies have taken an active part in the Belt and Road Initiative and accelerated their paces of "going global" since 2003. Among them, Guangdong-based companies, with their geographic advantages, play the role as front-runners in exploring overeas business opportunities. As an economic information provider, China Economic Information Service (CEIS) will go in full swing to help Guangdong-based firms’ sustainable and stable overseas business operation, according to Xu Yuchang, Chairman of the Board and CEO of CEIS of Xinhua News Agency at the forum.
The forum is sponsored by the Information Office of Guangdong Provincial Government, Zhuhai Municipal Government and China Economic Information Service (CEIS) of Xinhua News Agency. (Contributed by Wang Dupeng, Hu Pingchao, hupingchao@xinhua.org)
