Myanmar to set minimum wage after discussion with employers, employees

November 07, 2017

Abstract : Myanmar's national committee on fixing the minimum wage is planning to set the minimum wage rate which is acceptable to employers and employees after proper discussion, official Global New Light of Myanmar reported Monday.

YANGON, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's national committee on fixing the minimum wage is planning to set the minimum wage rate which is acceptable to employers and employees after proper discussion, official Global New Light of Myanmar reported Monday.

The authorities are now discussing to set the minimum pay rate between 4,000 kyats (2.9 U.S. dollars) and 4,800 kyats (3.5 U.S. dollars) for an eight-hour work day.

At present, the minimum wage is set at 3,600 kyats (2.6 U.S. dollars) per a work day since it was firstly introduced in 2015.

In accordance with the Minimum Wage Law, enacted in 2013, the national committee was formed to revise the minimum wage rate every two years.

The authorities are exerting efforts to increase the minimum pay rate as workers are struggling with the rising cost of living in their daily lives.

As part of seeking the way to set the new minimum wage, meeting between employers and employees will be held under the management of the national committee in Mandalay region on Nov. 11.

Also, a conference comprising government officials, employees, employers and officials working for labour affairs will be held in December this year. Enditem
