SINGAPORE, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Singapore will launch tenders for new agriculture land for food farming to increase food security and productivity, said the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) on Thursday in a press statement.
A total of 36 plots of farm land located in Lim Chu Kang and Sungei Tengah will be tendered on 20-year leases, according to AVA.
AVA said the tender encourages farmers to adopt innovative agri-technologies to maximize land and labor productivity as farmers with good production records will stand a good chance of winning new plots.
In a blog post on Tuesday, National Development Minister Lawrence Wong said that Singapore's farmers providing vegetables, fish and eggs act as a buffer against overseas supply disruptions.
It is therefore important for the local agriculture sector to stay innovative and productive given Singapore's land constraints, said AVA in its statement. Enditem
