YANGON, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar earned over 2.93 billion U.S. dollars from agricultural exports in the last fiscal year 2016-17 which ended in March, up by 315 million dollars year-on-year, the latest official figures showed.
Accounting for 25 percent of the total export earning during the year, the agricultural export was topped by various peas with 1.4 billion U.S. dollars, followed by rice and broken rice with 554 million dollars, maize with 253 million dollars and rubber with 200 million dollars, according to the Ministry of Commerce.
Challenging with erratic weather, capacity and technical know-how to yield value-added products and dependence on foreign market demand, Myanmar is making efforts to promote agricultural production, while addressing the issue of high transportation costs to keep up with the countries in the region.
Apart from agricultural industry, natural resources, fishery exports, the Cutting Making Packing (CMP) garment export and re-export sectors need to be upgraded, the ministry said. Enditem
