Brazilian meatpacker JBS resumes production after scandal

March 29, 2017

Abstract : Brazilia's largest meatpacking company JBS resumed production Monday in 33 of its 36 plants, 10 days after the revelation of a shocking scandal that prompted several countries to ban Brazilian meat products.

RIO DE JANEIRO, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Brazilia's largest meatpacking company JBS resumed production Monday in 33 of its 36 plants, 10 days after the revelation of a shocking scandal that prompted several countries to ban Brazilian meat products.

As the entire meatpacking sector in Brazil is still reeling from the scandal, the 33 JBS plants reopened on Monday will only work on a reduced capacity, JBS said.

According to Brazil's official figures, the country's meat exports fell from 62.2 million U.S. dollars a day on average in the week before the scandal to an average of 50.5 million dollars a day last week.

The fallout came after the Federal Police announced on March 17 Brazil's largest meatpackers were being investigated for bribing government inspectors to certify expired or adulterated meat.

It remains unknown whether the operation will have a lasting impact over the sector, but immediate losses have been significant. Enditem
