SEOUL, March 15 (Xinhua) -- Auto production in the Republic of Korea (ROK) grew last month on export recovery, a government report showed on Wednesday.
The number of cars produced in domestic factories reached 336,032 units in February, up 9.8 percent from a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
The increase was attributable to recovery in exports and domestic demand as well as more business days.
Car exports advanced 5.3 percent from a year earlier to 201,757 units in February. In terms of value, it expanded 9.6 percent to 3.28 billion U.S. dollars.
Imported car sales declined 7.3 percent to 16,651 units as brand value for foreign luxury automakers fell with the emissions-fabricating scandal of German automaker Volkswagen.
In the domestic market, sales of locally-made vehicles gained 10.1 percent to 120,182 units, helping contribute to the auto production expansion.
Auto parts exports rose 7.2 percent to 2.05 billion dollars in February due to the expanded production facilities by local carmakers in the U.S. and Europe. Enditem
