Businesses and leaders in the North East of England are keen to attract Chinese investment to the area.
That's according to a report in The Chronicle - a regional newspaper based in Newcastle.
They've followed the British government's 'Northern Powerhouse' strategy with interest.
As we've reported, the Northern Powerhouse has attracted extensive interest in China, particularly towards the British cities of Birmingham and Manchester:
Jonathan Stephens, Managing Director of Surrenden Invest, says with more direct flights from China to Manchester, buyers are flying in at short notice to inspect properties.
“Interest for the local property market has increased from Chinese buyers as Manchester’s credentials as an investment hotspot continue to increase, not only leading the Northern Powerhouse but also challenging London as the buy-to-let capital of the UK” he said.
However, this success has led contributors to The Chronicle to feel that cities in the North East are being missed-out, and that perhaps the Northern Powerhouse should also be placing emphasis on Newcastle, Gateshead and so on.
As Professor Yu Xiong said in an interview with the paper:
"Chinese investors know London, Manchester and Birmingham, but they do not know the North East. We want more of a voice here."
