BEIJING, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- A deepwater wharf built by China Harbor Engineering Company Ltd. (CHEC) in Karachi, Pakistan was put into trial operation on Dec. 9.
The biggest deepwater container terminal in Karachi, the wharf is the first in Pakistan that is able to handle ships with draft of 18 meters, according to CHEC.
The project, involving a contract value of 550 million U.S. dollars, includes the construction of seawall, docks, soft foundation treatment, and storage yards.
Construction of the seawall and soft foundation treatment were already completed in 2013 and June this year, respectively. The first three berths were completed between 2015 and 2016, while the last berth and the storage yards are expected to complete construction in the first half of 2017.
With a designed service life of 50 years, the wharf will be able to handle container ships larger than Panamax with annual throughput of standard containers hitting 3.1 million. Enditem (Edited by Yang Qi, kateqiyang@xinhua.org)
