BEIJING, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Pifo–Papallactago Highway Improvement Project, the first high altitude road project undertaken by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) in Ecuador, opened to traffic on Dec. 5.
The project, located at the junction of East Pichincha Province and West Napo Province of Ecuador, is to build a 36.339 km long 2-way four-lane highway traversing plateau areas with elevation of some 4,200 meters.
CRBC started construction work for the road improvement project in mid-2012, which included the extension and rehabilitation ofexisting roads and bridges.
Upon completion, the highway, which links the mountain areas and the Amazonian area in central Ecuador, is expected to significantly improve local traffic conditions and boost development of logistics, trade and tourism in the country. (Edited by Duan Jing, duanjing@xinhua.org)
