COLOMBO, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena laid the foundation stone for the construction of a vehicle assembly park named "Western Vehicle Assembly Plant," local media reported on Wednesday.
The plant will be set up in Kuliyapitiya in the north western part of the country.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who addressed the gathering at the occasion said the plant would create as many as 2,000 direct employment opportunities for youths.
Initially, the vehicles to be assembled will be released to the local market by 2020. Afterwards, by 2023, vehicles will be exported.
