SANTIAGO, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chile's President Michelle Bachelet will attend China's Belt and Road forum for international cooperation to be held in Beijing this May.
"President Michelle Bachelet will participate in the Belt and Road forum for international cooperation that China's government is organizing ... and will make a state visit," Foreign Affairs Minister Heraldo Munoz announced on Monday.
The initiative takes inspiration from the ancient Silk Road to spur development across China and Eurasia by promoting infrastructure projects to facilitate trade.
Munoz made the announcement after meeting with China's ambassador to Chile Li Baorong, who presented the South American country with a million U.S.-dollar donation to help recovery efforts following devastating forest fires that ravaged half a million hectares of forest land and crops.
"From the first moment (of the disaster), the Chinese government contacted us to convey its support," Munoz said, adding China made an initial donation of 50,000 U.S. dollars via Chile's Red Cross.
Chile reiterated an invitation to China to attend an international gathering on trade and investment in the current financial climate, which the country will host on March 14 and 15 in the resort city of Vina del Mar.
