Copenhagen police beef up security after Berlin attack

December 21, 2016

Abstract : Police in the Danish capital of Copenhagen announced on Tuesday that security at the city's Christmas markets and the main shopping street had been beefed up following Monday's lorry attack in Berlin, Germany, that left 12 dead and dozens injured.

COPENHAGEN, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Police in the Danish capital of Copenhagen announced on Tuesday that security at the city's Christmas markets and the main shopping street had been beefed up following Monday's lorry attack in Berlin, Germany, that left 12 dead and dozens injured.

"We have increased our presence at the Christmas markets and on Stroeget street after Berlin. We will continue to follow the situation closely," Copenhagen Police announced on its Tweet account.

On Tuesday afternoon, police were seen installing physical barriers on some sections of the bustling shopping street of Stroeget in downtown Copenhagen.

"Unexpected terror attacks targeting the gathering of innocent people is very difficult to completely protect against, but we are now in collaboration with the Danish Security and Intelligence Service PET and the Danish National Police to take some extra precautions to ensure that the people of Copenhagen are protected as well as possible during the Christmas rush," police spokesman Peter Dahl said in a press release.

Dahl however stressed that "the risk of becoming a victim of a terrorist attack in Denmark remains limited."

Copenhagen Police have been on high alert since the terrorist attack in Copenhagen in February 2015 when two victims were shot dead and five police officers were wounded. The Islamic terrorist was later killed by police.
