UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese envoy to the UN on Friday called for better cooperation between the UN and the African Union (AU) to solve the regional hotspot issues.
Liu Jieyi, China's permanent representative to the UN, made the appeal at a Security Council meeting on cooperation between the UN and the AU.
Liu said the AU has a unique role to play in resolving hotspot issues in Africa because it has rich experience in good offices and mediation and also enjoys advantages in geography, history and culture.
He said China supports the UN in listening to the viewpoints of the AU and African countries and in giving full play to their respective advantages in the process of seeking political settlements of the African hotspot issues.
Liu also noted that China attaches great importance to the cooperation with AU, and will continue to participate in UN's peace operations in Africa, and help African countries to strengthen their capacity in national defense, anti-terrorism, custom management and immigration.
"We are committed to developing a new type of international relations with win-win cooperation at its core and building a community of shared future and a secured and bright future for us all," he added.
At the Security Council meeting, the 15-nation council unanimously adopted a resolution calling for effective steps to further enhance the relationship between the UN and the AU, and more support to enhance AU peace operations.
The resolution also stressed the need to enhance the sustainability of financing AU-led peace support operations authorized by the UN Security Council. Enditem
