Myanmar takes measures to reduce car crashes

Abstract : Myanmar is to take tight measures in a bid to reduce car accidents starting Aug. 1, official report said Thursday.

YANGON, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar is to take tight measures in a bid to reduce car accidents starting Aug. 1, official report said Thursday.

Under a step-by-step plan, equipment for testing speed limit will be used and violators will be arrested in the next stage.

Education on traffic rules and speed restriction will be launched in regions of Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw for two months from June 1 to July 31.

According to traffic police force, motor vehicles are allowed to drive at 48 km per hour in downtown areas, at 80 km per hour in suburban areas, while trucks and vehicles with trailers at 32 km per hour and at 56 km per hour in suburban areas.

On express ways, passenger-buses are allowed to drive at 90 km per hour and family-used vehicles at 100 km per hour, while trucks are at 60 km per hour.

The violators will be fined or imprisoned for short-term.

In 2016, a total of 2,706 car accidents took place in Yangon killing 623 people and injuring 3,410.
