Huawei launches program to boost Zambia's AI capacity in public services

November 03, 2026

Abstract : Chinese tech giant Huawei on Monday launched a capacity-building program in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia, to strengthen the country's ability to develop and apply artificial intelligence (AI) in public services.

LUSAKA, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese tech giant Huawei on Monday launched a capacity-building program in Lusaka, the capital of Zambia, to strengthen the country's ability to develop and apply artificial intelligence (AI) in public services.

In collaboration with the Smart Zambia Institute, a government agency, Huawei organized a program themed "Empowering Zambia's AI Future: From Strategy to Practice," gathering government officials, policymakers, and technical experts for discussions and practical sessions on AI applications in public institutions.

According to Huawei, the program will cover multiple areas, including the national AI strategy, large language models, AI-powered data centers, prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation and AI agents.

Addressing the event, Percy Chinyama, national coordinator of the Smart Zambia Institute, said AI could accelerate the government's digital transformation agenda by reducing reliance on paper-based systems, improving data management and supporting informed decision-making.

Chinyama urged government officials to embrace AI to improve efficiency and service delivery, with a focus on practical solutions to challenges affecting economic growth and the livelihoods of Zambians.

Yang Hebin, chairperson of Huawei's Southern African Multi-Country Board, said the initiative reflected the company's commitment to supporting Zambia's digital transformation through investment in technology and human capital development.

AI could offer Zambia an opportunity to accelerate national development by improving productivity and service delivery across various sectors, Yang added.
