Roundup: Bound by resolve, China and Lesotho mark national milestones, look to shared future

October 13, 2026

Abstract : Two distant nations, vastly different in geography, size and historical trajectory, reached major national milestones within days of each other this month.

MASERU, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Two distant nations, vastly different in geography, size and historical trajectory, reached major national milestones within days of each other this month.

On Oct. 1, the People's Republic of China marked its 77th anniversary. Three days later, the Kingdom of Lesotho celebrated 60 years of independence.

Despite their physical distance and different sizes, a common thread runs through both anniversaries: an unyielding resolve to chart an independent path toward development and modernization.

"Our two countries have different national circumstances," Chinese Ambassador to Lesotho Yang Xiaokun said at a cultural event in Maseru on Friday. "But these anniversaries remind us of the determination of our peoples to shape our own future, pursue development, and build a better life."

Both nations embarked on modern state-building from arduous beginnings. In 1949, the New China emerged as a war-torn, agrarian society. In 1966, Lesotho gained independence as a poor, landlocked kingdom surrounded by apartheid South Africa.

Since independence, Lesotho has sought a development path suited to its own conditions, working to strengthen economic resilience and governance. China's own transformation into the world's second-largest economy has likewise rested on a path tailored to national realities, built on self-reliance and long-term planning.

"Modernization does not equate to Westernization, and there is no single model for development," Yang emphasized, affirming the right of African nations to chart their own course.

Lesotho's recent experience underscores why economic self-determination matters. The kingdom's vital garment industry has faced severe disruptions due to shifting global trade environments, leaving factories vulnerable.

Having navigated similar uncertainties during its own growth, China has consistently offered stability to its African partners. Under the frameworks of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, China has extended zero-tariff treatment to all 53 African countries with which it has diplomatic ties, including Lesotho.

Practical cooperation between the two nations continues to yield tangible results, ranging from debt relief and streamlined trade in agricultural exports like wool and mohair, to human resource development initiatives that sent over 270 Basotho professionals to China for training this year alone.

Progress extends beyond economics into cultural exchanges and global governance, where China advocates equal rights, equal opportunities and equal rules for all nations regardless of size. On Friday, a Chinese artistic troupe performed traditional Wu Opera in Maseru to mark Lesotho's diamond jubilee, celebrating mutual learning between distinct civilizations.

"Sixty years is not only a milestone; it is a new starting point," Ambassador Yang said, closing his address with Lesotho's national motto: "Khotso, Pula, Nala" (Peace, Rain, Prosperity).

Standing at this historic juncture, China and Lesotho are moving forward as equal partners, bound by a shared resolve to turn bilateral cooperation into lasting prosperity for both peoples.
