BEIJING, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- In Chongqing, 77 local vehicle to grid (V2G) charging piles discharged an aggregate of 200,000-plus kWh of electricity by Nov. 5, 2025, sufficient to enable 1-hour power use of 100,000 households.
As one of the initial cities piloting V2G mass application, the southwestern Chinese city has actively advanced application of V2G technology, which allows two-way power flow between electric vehicles (EV) and the grids.
Easy to reserve power during off-peak hours, V2G stations remain one of the important options available for "peak shaving and valley filling", meaning that they can help meet power demand in peak hours and shift load to low-cost and off-peak hours.

By the end of October, 209 V2G stations had been built in Chongqing and 515 V2G charging piles were erected in these stations with a gross rated power at 12,200 kW and power discharge of 405,200 kWh.
Thanks to the maturing V2G technology, an EV service affiliate of State Grid Chongqing Electric Power Co., Ltd., the local grid operator, encouraged lots of local EVs to discharge electricity, relieving effectively the load pressure of local grids.

For instance, a V2G station in Jinyun Avenue of Beibei District in Chongqing has discharged electricity of 2,751.67 kWh, which can either be used by local households or be uploaded to the grids for sale.
Via the internet of vehicles (IoV), State Grid Chongqing Electric Power optimized related electricity discharging timing and orders and improved notably its power demand peak-shaving capabilities, said Wang Song, head of market division of the marketing department of State Grid Chongqing Electric Power.
By integrating V2G charging pile debugging, power discharging, metering, invoicing and settlement, the company verified feasibility of the V2G businesses cooperation and offered demonstrative experience in this regard.
For next step, State Grid Chongqing Electric Power intends to crank up input and pool data through the city-level digital fast-charging platform to cover all V2G resource types to facilitate orderly adjustment of grid load.
