German exports to the United States and China fell in August compared with the same month a year ago, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reported on Monday.
Exports to China fell by as much as 15.2% to €7 billion ($7.8 billion), while the fall in exports to the US was 3.2% to €12.6 billion. The falls were attributed to weaker demand.
Total exports to countries outside the European Union were down 4.8% in August at €55.2 billion. Adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects, the figure came in at €58.5 billion, down 1.2% on the year.
Compared with July this year, the decline was 1.1%.
Declines were seen in exports to Switzerland, down 7.6%, Türkiye, down 7.2%, Japan, down 5.9% and Mexico, down 16.2%.
By contrast, exports to the United Kingdom rose 5.7% to €6 billion. Rises were also posted in exports to South Korea, up 9.5%, India, up 10.3% and Brazil, up 11.6%.
Exports to Russia at €600,000 were 14.4% down from August 2023. Russia has fallen from fifth place on the table of German export destinations to 19th since February 2022.
