The energy group RWE has been authorised to build two more large wind farms in the North Sea. The company was awarded the contract by the Federal Network Agency for two sites located 110 and 115 kilometres north-west of the island of Borkum on the border with the Dutch exclusive economic zone. Wind turbines with a total capacity of 2,000 megawatts may be built on each of the two sites. If large turbines with an individual output of 15 megawatts are used, this would mean 133 wind turbines per wind farm.
Joint wind farm development with Totalenergies?
RWE will pay an auction price totalling 250 million euros for the two sites, the company announced in Essen. It will examine the possibility of a joint development of the offshore projects with TotalEnergies, it added. RWE did not initially provide further details on the type and scope of a possible participation of the French oil company in the projects.
Parks to be connected to the grid in 2031 and 2032
RWE intends to make final investment decisions by 2027 and 2028. Construction at sea is scheduled to start in 2029 and 2030, with full commissioning planned for 2031 and 2032. RWE already operates 19 offshore wind farms, including six off the German coast. Others are already under construction.
On Monday, the grid agency also awarded the rights for a further area on which a wind farm with a capacity of 1,500 megawatts is to be built. The contract was awarded to Waterekke Energy GmbH. The authority did not disclose the auction proceeds in any of the cases.
