BEIJING, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- The trading volume of green electricity in east China's Jiangsu Province reached 12.657 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) in 2024, increasing by 143 percent year on year and hitting a record high, equivalent to reducing coal consumption by 3.89 million tonnes and carbon dioxide emissions by 9.69 million tonnes, the Jiangsu electricity trading center said recently.
Green electricity refers to electricity with zero or near-zero carbon dioxide emissions in its production process, mainly coming from renewable energy such as solar power and wind power. Green electricity trading refers to the trading of green electricity to meet the demand of electricity users for purchasing and consuming green electricity, with corresponding green electricity consumption certification provided.
Since the start of green electricity trading nationwide in 2021, Jiangsu has seen its trading volume of green electricity jump from 1.369 billion kWh to over 12 billion kWh, growing by 110 percent annually on average, with the number of market entities expanding from over 20 to 1,530, covering the energy and chemical industry, electronic information, and foreign trade among ten major industries.
The province has seen the proportion of inter-provincial green electricity trading rise from 10 percent to 59.74 percent by 2024.
More than 30 percent of foreign-funded enterprises in the Suzhou Industrial Park have participated in green electricity trading, becoming the main force in such trading.
Jiangsu has built the first provincial, municipal, and county-level green electricity service network in China, and set up service stations in 13 cities, with a professional team of 982 people providing over a thousand on-site consultations, resulting in 1.005 billion yuan of green electricity trading.
During the Spring Festival, nearly 3,000 charging piles in the province achieved 100-percent green electricity supply, with the trading volume of green electricity notching 20 million kWh, said Wei Xu, general manager of the Jiangsu electricity trading center.
According to the center, efforts will be made to promote the involvement of virtual power plants, and energy storage entities among others, and build an ecosystem of "green electricity plus new business models" in 2025.
Currently, the trading volume of green electricity in Jiangsu has accounted for 6.3 percent of its total electricity consumption, and it is expected to exceed 15 percent by the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan period.
