BEIJING, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- State Grid Henan Electric Power Company is adopting advanced temperature monitoring technology to ensure power line safety during snowy and icy weather.
"Installation of the distributed optical fiber monitoring devices on the Han-Zheng Power Line has completed, with tests confirming effective data transmission and monitoring," said a staff with the Electric Power Research Institute of the grid company after testing the system which could monitor the temperature during ice melting operations on power lines in snowy and icy weather.
In order to ensure power line safety during extreme weather conditions, the research institute has leveraged its scientific achievements to develop an innovative solution by using distributed optical sensing technology to monitor power line temperature and ice thickness during the ice melting process. The solution was successfully tested during an ice melting drill on the ±800 kV Shan-Wu Line on Jan. 17.
The institute continued to advance researches on distributed optical sensing technology by integrating refined meteorological data to enhance the monitoring accuracy. (Edited by Jiang Yujuan, jiangyj@xinhua.org)
