BEIJING, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Residents of Pingjin Town, Liangping District, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, were busy pasting colorful Chinese New Year paintings on January 29 at a venue for the inheritance of Liangping woodblock Chinese New Year paintings, a national intangible cultural heritage. State Grid Chongqing Wanzhou Electric Power Co., as the electric power provider for Pingjin Town, has been assisting in the inheritance of the local Chinese New Year painting culture.
Liangping woodblock Chinese New Year painting is a form of folk art that originated during Emperor Jiajing's reign in the Ming Dynasty (1521-1567). Themed on driving away evil and embracing fortune, celebrating auspiciousness, and telling historical stories, such paintings encapsulate good wishes and reflect the characteristics of the Sichuan and Chongqing culture. Influenced by local culture, Liangping woodblock Chinese New Year paintings have formed a unique artistic system. The production process involves more than 30 steps, with colors made from plant and mineral extracts, while the printing paper is handmade from locally produced white bamboo.
