BEIJING, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Northeast China’s Liaoning Province kicked off a black start test in Dalian, a coastal city in the province, on June 17 and 18. It’s the first time in China to use an energy storage station as black start resource, a generation resource that can start without support from the grid in the event of a widespread outage.
The black start test is to examine methods of the power system recovery from major outages by using generators capable of being self-started without grid-supplied power.
During the test, the energy storage station was self-started and then it provided start-up power to a coal-fired generation unit in 30 kilometers away, which was successfully re-started and connected to the grid.
The test proves that a energy storage station could use as black start resource, which could increase the resiliency of the city power grid and improve the power system reliability, said a staff with the State Grid Liaoning Electric Power Supply Co., Ltd. (Edited by Jiang Yujuan, jiangyj@xinhua.org)
