The conversion of a long-distance gas pipeline for the transport of hydrogen started in northern Germany.
It is the first time this has been done in Germany, the company Open Grid Europe (OGE) announced from its headquarters in the city of Essen.
Within two days, natural gas is be pumped out of the pipeline sections linking the town of Emsbüren in Lower Saxony to Legden in the neighbouring state of North Rhine Westphalia.
This will allow for upgrading works to begin, adapting the pipeline for the transport of hydrogen, provisionally from 2025 onwards.
The goal is to build a nationwide hydrogen infrastructure in Germany in the coming years.
