Demand for private rooftop solar panels has soared in Germany. In the first quarter, 159,000 photovoltaic systems for private houses went into operation across Germany, an increase of 146 percent compared to the previous year, according to an announcement by the German Solar Industry Association (BSW).
The BSW expects demand for solar panels in Germany to grow at a double-digit percentage rate for the seventh year in a row this year. That includes private homeowners as well as other investors - including farmers who are installing solar systems on agricultural land.
The association estimates that the number of new solar power storage systems will already exceed the total number of solar batteries installed in 2022 by the end of June. BSW CEO Carsten Körnig attributed the solar boom to several factors, including the sharp rise in energy prices last year and the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic: "Many homeowners invested heavily in their homes during the pandemic."
High demand from private homeowners is among the most important drivers of the energy transition, according to the BSW. Their demand for photovoltaic systems and solar storage systems more than tripled between 2022 and 2019, the BSW reported, citing data from the German Federal Network Agency. "Almost all signs continue to point to growth: Solar panels are inexpensive, the number of skilled workers is rising, the supply situation is improving, and market barriers are increasingly being removed," Körnig explained.
