BEIJING, March 24 (Xinhua) -- The Thar Coal Block-I Coal Electricity Integration project in Pakistan was officially put into commercial operation on March 22, reported China Radio International (CRI) Friday.
Located in Sindh Province of Pakistan, the Thar Coal Block-I Coal Electricity Integration project is a key energy cooperation project under the framework of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor(CPEC), which is independently developed, constructed and operated by Shanghai Electric Group Co., Ltd.
The project, which includes an open-pit coal mine with an annual output of 7.8 million tonnes of lignite and a coal-fired power station with two 660 MW high-parameter supercritical thermal power units, was signed on April 20, 2015, and the construction began in 2019. The coal-fired power station in this project has been officially put into commercial operation on February 5 this year.
It is learned that total investment of the project during the construction period exceeded 3 billion U.S. dollars, and more than 18,000 jobs were created for the local people. After put into operation, it will provide continuous, stable, clean and preferential electricity to more than 4 million Pakistani households, and will also make positive contributions to reducing energy costs, improving energy structure and enhancing energy security in Pakistan.
