BEIJING, Dec. 20(Xinhua) -- The U.S. coffee chain Starbucks has gradually deepened cooperation with southwest China's Yunnan province since 2012, when Starbucks launched Asia's first Farmer Support Center in Pu'er city in the province, reported Shanghai Securities News on Tuesday.
According to Starbucks China, in the past ten years, staff at the Pu'er-based Farmer Support Center have grown from one to 28, providing free professional training and technical support to over 30,000 local farmers.
From 2012 to 2022, farmers in Yunnan have sold 56,433 tonnes of coffee beans, including 99 tonnes of premium coffee beans, which are of higher quality. Besides, a total of 43,000 tonnes of Yunnan coffee beans were exported to Europe, Americas and other Asian countries through Starbucks.
With a large multi-ethnic population, Yunnan is home to rich tourism resources and a major tea and coffee production area in China.
The coffee plantation area in Yunnan was 1.39 million mu (about 93,000 hectares) in 2021, with an annual yield of 108,700 tonnes, according to data from the Yunnan provincial department of agriculture and rural affairs. Pu'er City accounts for around half of the coffee plantation area and production in the province.
