This year's winners of the 100,000-euro Thuringian Innovation Award come from the city of Jena and the Weimar region. Thuringia is a federal state in eastern Germany. Five top developments and one entrepreneur were honored this week in Weimar, according to the Thuringian Ministry of Economics. This year, 62 applications were submitted for the competition.
Many of the proposals dealt with challenges in areas such as medicine and infection control, energy conservation, resource conservation, and sustainability.
Awards were presented in various categories. The companies that were honored included Idloop from Jena for a contactless fingerprint scanner and Coachwhisperer for developing a communication system that enables coaches to contact athletes during games.
Jenpneumatik & Schlauchtechnik from Jena received the prize for a cleaning process for removing rust or paint using water ice blasting. Jenoptik Optical Systems was recognized for developing a component for the rapid inspection of photonic integrated circuits.
The Jena-based start-up Fluldect, which is initially focusing on solutions for testing drinking water quality, received the special prize for start-ups. In addition, the managing director of Layertec from Mellingen (Weimar regional district), Hartmut Heyer, was honored for innovative entrepreneurship. His company, which has more than 350 employees, produces optical parts for laser technology.
The Thuringian Innovation Award was presented for the 25th time this year. It recognizes the innovative strength of companies and is intended to encourage the development of new products. The prize money is donated by Thuringia's Ministry of Economics.
