SHANGHAI, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Dozens of world’s top laureates are going to gather in Shanghai on November 3 to exchange insights on new climate change solutions.
As one of the heavy-weighted forums ahead of the 5th World Laureates Forum (WLA Forum), the WLA Zero Carbon Forum keeps its attention on dual carbon goals and holds in-depth discussions about international collaboration on climate governance, cutting-edge technologies for climate actions, and eco-friendly energy.
Top laureates to convene in Shanghai
The forum is attracting world’s decorated scientists, including three Nobel Prize winners such as Steven Chu, Andre Geim, and Michael Levitt, as well as six academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering such as Jiang Xuepei, Zhu Tong, He Kebin, Huang Zhen, Jin Yong and Jiang Yi.
These scientists are going to exchange insights on international collaboration on carbon neutrality, and major breakthroughs in pollution reduction, energy-efficient buildings, and waste recycling, said Zhao Yujia, director of WLA Shanghai Center Director of Think Tank.
In addition, leading industrial experts will also discuss the latest developments in hydrogen energy, solar power and digital technologies, Zhao added.
International cooperation on focus
As one of the highest-profile science conferences and the foremost scientific gathering of prize winners in the world, the forum will feature the science roadmap leading to the "Carbon Peak and Neutrality" goals with a focus on climate change, dual carbon strategies, global climate initiatives and multilateral collaboration in science innovation and industrial development.
“With the aim to translate and maximize the value of world-leading scientists' intellectual asset, WLA will continue to promote international exchanges and collaboration on climate change,” said Zhao.
Cutting-edge technologies to be discussed
The forum will center on frontier research in carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), emission reduction technologies, pollution control and management, carbon sinks, energy-efficient building and advanced materials which accelerate global green transformation.
The energy sector is a key contributor to climate change, accounting for more than two-thirds of global greenhouse gas emissions. In addressing the need for a green energy transition in the world, the forum will also hold a constructive discussion on green energy technologies such as alternative energy resources, zero-carbon transportation, advanced energy storage technologies and electricity generation.
The event is also supported by Xinhua News Agency Shanghai Branch, China Economic Information Service, Sequoia China Charity Foundation, and Parkland Foundation.
The WLA Forum, initiated by World Laureates Association (WLA) in 2018, is held every year since 2018, with world laureates across all sectors exchanging insights on international cooperation, major breakthroughs in basic science, challenges and opportunities of technology advancement and critical global issues facing mankind.
The WLA is a non-governmental and non-profit international organization. It is one of the world's highest profile organizations of laureates with three missions: advocacy for basic science, promotion of international cooperation, and support for young scientists.
