BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- The second power generation unit of the Türkiye Hunutlu thermal power plant project invested by Shanghai Electric Power (600021.SH) recently started commercial operation, according to the Chinese company's filing with the Shanghai Stock Exchange on Monday.

The project, with a total investment of 1.7 billion U.S. dollars mainly from Shanghai Electric Power, is China's biggest project with direct investment in Türkiye. It is also a flagship project linking the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) with Türkiye's "Middle Corridor" vision.

The coal-fired power plant located in Sugozu village in south Türkiye's Adana Province is designed to have a total installed capacity of 1,320 megawatts. It is expected to generate 9 billion kilowatt-hours of power annually, accounting for about 3 percent of the total electricity supply across Türkiye, according to the filing.

The Hunutlu project includes two 660 megawatts ultra-supercritical coal-fired power generation units. The first unit was put into operation in June.

Equipped with advanced environmental protection systems, the power plant could make its pollutant emission indicators meet or even outperform the requirements of environmental impact assessment and the European Union, thus effectively protecting surrounding natural ecology and environment, the filing says.
