German carmaker BMW is expanding its production of electric drive systems in Germany. The second production line for battery modules started Monday at the company’s plant in Leipzig, in the eastern German state of Saxony, BMW announced. "The Leipzig plant remains electrified," said the director of the plant Petra Peterhänsel. Following the phase-out of BMW i3 production, she said, the expertise and experience of the employees will be utilized and jobs will be secured in the long term. In this way, the Leipzig site will remain fit for the future.
The automaker has invested 70 million euros in the production line alone at its Leipzig site. Around 250 employees will work on the production of battery modules in the second production line by the end of 2022. The e-component production area at the Leipzig site currently already employs over 700 people. The first production line in Leipzig was launched in May 2021. By 2030, the BMW Group aims to achieve at least half of its sales with fully electric vehicles.
