Brazil's International Poultry and Pork Show attaches importance to Chinese market demand

August 25, 2022

Abstract : The 2022 International Poultry and Pork Show (SIAVS) was held early this month in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with over 20,000 attendees from all over the world. As a major export destination of animal proteins from Brazil, China's market demand was closely watched.

SAO PAULO, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- The 2022 International Poultry and Pork Show (SIAVS) was held early this month in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with over 20,000 attendees from all over the world. As a major export destination of animal proteins from Brazil, China's market demand was closely watched.

Ricardo Santin, president of Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA), the organizer of SIAVS, told international journalists at the press conference that China has been the biggest buyer of Brazil's animal proteins for over three years and is the biggest importer of Brazil's poultry and pork.

"This cooperation between Brazil and China's processing industries is very solid and respectful," said Santin, who considered the cooperation as complementary for Brazil's production.

He also appreciated China's "quality growth" that is bringing more Chinese in the animal proteins consumption market, as well as the measures that expand meat imports from countries it trusts and meet the inspection and quarantine requirements.

"That's what we do. We introduce the (Brazilian) companies that are able to produce the way as the Chinese want and meet the sanitary standards," he said.

According to Luis Rua, the market director of ABPA, Brazil has increased its share in China's animal proteins imports over the past few years. For instance, the share of Brazil's pork increased from some 8 percent a few years ago to about 13 percent nowadays in China's total pork imports. And Brazil's chicken products account for about 50 percent of China's total imports.

"We have seen an evolution of Chinese purchases and this scenario should be expected at least till the middle of the next year," Rua was optimistic.

This year, ABPA invited Brazilian Association of Pisciculture (Peixe BR) to SIAVS for the first time to present the achievement of the country's pisciculture industry.

Fernando Aguiar, the director of International Affairs with Peixe BR, disclosed that China is the third largest export destination of Brazil’s fish. In 2021, Brazil's fish exports to China were 1840 tons and valued 1.63 million dollars, accounting for 19 percent and 8 percent, respectively, of the totals, up 61 percent and 88 percent on a yearly basis. The exports were frozen fish and other fish by-products unsuitable for human consumption.

Brazilian market also welcomes the Chinese products. Alexandre Costa is the managing partner of China's feed and food ingredients provider FNF Ingredients in Brazil. He has been working in the animal nutrition sector for over two decades and joined the Chinese company two years ago.

"We import all our products from China and sell them in the local market. Any products related to animal production in terms of animal nutrition and health, I can find a supplier in China and bring the products to serve Brazilian customers," he told Xinhua.

With the past fairs held every two years, the 2022 SIAVS was the first in-person fair since the pandemic. As a most influential event of the industry that gathers domestic and international industry leaders, technicians, researchers, consulting firms and purchasers, the expo is of great significance in creating the image of Brail’s agribusiness and showing its competitiveness and provides precious opportunities to entities that search for new technical investment, first-hand industry information to boost development and productivity.
