The mood in the German economy brightened in May, partially recovering from a slump at the start of the war in Ukraine, according to a leading economic research institute.
The closely watched index from the ifo institute rose by 1.1 points compared to April, to 93.0.
The index is based on a survey of about 9,000 companies.
Analysts had on average expected a downturn to 91.4 points.
"Signs of a recession are not visible at the moment," ifo president Clemens Fuest said. He added that the German economy is proving robust despite inflation concerns, material shortages and the war in Ukraine.
In the services sector, companies were "noticeably more satisfied" with current business, ifo said in a press release.
By contrast, service providers' expectations for the future were more pessimistic.
