Germany's total imports grew 3.4 percent month-on-month to 117.4 billion euros in March. The country's exports, meanwhile, fell by 3.3 percent to 120.6 billion euros.

The United States continued to be Germany's largest customer country as goods worth 11.5 billion euros were exported to the United States in March, slightly up from February, according to Destatis.

Due to sanctions against Russia in response to the Russia-Ukraine conflict as well as "further measures to restrict exports, and unsanctioned behavior of market participants," German exports to Russia slumped 62.3 percent in March to 0.9 billion euros.

German imports from other member countries of the European Union (EU) fell by 3.0 percent to 56.7 billion euros in March. The country's EU exports also decreased slightly to 66.6 billion euros. (1 euro = 1.05 U.S. dollars)
