Fuel prices in Germany are now amongst the highest in Europe. Across the EU, the local diesel price is only surpassed by Finland and Sweden, according to figures published by the Federal Statistical Office on Monday.
The official figures show diesel costs €2.06 ($2.24) per litre in Germany as of April 4. That was 45 cents more than in neighbouring Poland, for example. More recent figures show prices have fallen back slightly, but not as much as in other EU countries.
Diesel prices stand at €1.76 in Luxemburg, in Austria at €1.84 and France at €1.89. The cheapest diesel in the EU is found in Malta at €1.21 ($1.32) per litre and in Hungary at €1.42.
Germany is also one of the most expensive countries in Europe for E5 super petrol. On April 4, it was the fourth most expensive country in the EU, together with Greece, at €2.06 per litre.
The cheapest neighbouring country for E5 is Poland at €1.42 per litre, 64 cents less than in Germany. It is followed by Austria at €1.72, Luxembourg at €1.73, the Czech Republic at €1.81 and France at €1.83 per litre.
A central reason for the differences is different rates of taxation.
