China's alcohol-making sector reports strong performance in 2021

Abstract : China's alcohol-making sector recorded a strong performance in 2021, serving as a leading profit contributor to the country's light industry, according to a report released by the China National Light Industry Council.

BEIJING, March 12 (Xinhua) -- China's alcohol-making sector recorded a strong performance in 2021, serving as a leading profit contributor to the country's light industry, according to a report released by the China National Light Industry Council.

Companies in the country's major light industry sub-sectors raked in total profits of 1.7 trillion yuan (about 269.4 billion U.S. dollars) last year, of which the alcohol-making sector accounted for 13.8 percent.

The total profits of alcohol companies with annual revenues of at least 20 million yuan stood at 194.9 billion yuan in the period, according to the report.

In terms of production, major distilleries saw the output of Chinese Baijiu (a type of distilled spirit) top 7.15 million kiloliters last year, down 0.6 percent year on year, data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology shows.

The output of major breweries rose 5.6 percent year on year, and that of major wine-making companies dropped 29.1 percent year on year in the same period.
