Multiple cities in China release measures to encourage consumption

November 15, 2021

Abstract : Approaching end of the year, multiple cities in China have recently released new measures to encourage consumption, such as expanding automobile consumption, promoting consumption in business areas and issuing coupons, in order to strengthen the role of consumption as the anchor of economic growth.

BEIJING, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Approaching end of the year, multiple cities in China have recently released new measures to encourage consumption, such as expanding automobile consumption, promoting consumption in business areas and issuing coupons, in order to strengthen the role of consumption as the anchor of economic growth.

New energy vehicles (NEVs) is one of the key areas in encouraging commodity consumption. Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province, has recently unveiled a number of measures to encourage local consumption, which includes increasing the assigned incremental number of energy-saving vehicles to 80,000 in the time period 2021 to 2022. The city of Shenzhen in Guangdong Province has also decided to further relax the restrictions of applying for NEVs to encourage the sales.

In Quanzhou, southeast China's Fujian Province, consumers buying NEVs worth more than 50,000 yuan will receive subsidies of 5,000 yuan for each vehicle. For certain models of Hongqi NEVs, consumers can receive up to 60,000 yuan subsidy for each car in Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, northeast China's Jilin Province.

It is predicted that this year's total output of China's NEVs will reach 2.4 million, with more measures to encourage NEV consumption expected to be released by the beginning of next year, according to Cui Dongshu, secretary general of the China Passenger Car Association.

For cities like Beijing, building advanced business areas is one of the keys to encourage consumption. Chaoyang District in Beijing will expand the Sanlitun business area and build more than ten demonstrative commercial streets. Tianjin Municipality in north China has recently announced to build four new shopping malls and two cross-border e-commerce offline experience stores by the end of the year.

Other cities are issuing coupons this month to encourage consumption. Taiyuan, capital of north China's Shanxi Province, issued targeted coupons worth 60 million yuan to promote sales. Xiamen, southeast China's Fujian Province has launched a consumption season activity that will last until March 31, 2022, with coupons worth 20 million yuan issued to support the activity.
