BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Beijing's new economy achieved an added value of 787.08 billion yuan in the first half of this year, accounting for 40.9 percent of local GDP and showing an year-on-year increase of 2.4 percentage points, according to data from the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics.
Beijing's high-end industries, which are growing rapidly, have become an important engine driving economic growth. In the first six months, the added value of high-tech sectors went up 25.7 percent year on year to 543.13 billion yuan, accounting for 28.2 percent of local GDP. During the same period, the added value of strategic emerging industries in Beijing amounted to 534.39 billion yuan, up 26.4 percent year on year and accounting for 27.8 percent of the city's GDP.
The popularization of 5G technology has given a boost to the development of the culture plus internet sector of Beijing, which raked in 461.53 billion yuan of revenue in the first half, up 35.9 percent year on year and accounting for 57.4 percent of the revenue of the cultural industry above designated size. Of the total, the operating revenue in multimedia, games, animation, digital publishing and software development amounted to 109.79 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 53.3 percent.
Internet plus service sectors also embarked on a fast track of development thanks to wide application of new technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence and Internet of Things (IoT). In the first half of the year, the operating revenue of internet data service enterprises and internet information service providers above designated size increased 37 percent and 31.6 percent year on year, respectively.
The revenue of online sports enterprises grew by more than 40 percent year on year, and that of online healthcare, online entertainment and online gaming firms all rose 30 percent year on year.
Driven by the rapid development of emerging services such as mobile internet and data center, Beijing's telecom business maintained a fast growth of more than 20 percent from January to June.
The consumption modes in Beijing became more internet-based. In the first half, the city's online retail sales by wholesale and retail businesses above designated size, accommodation and catering segments stood at 241.46 billion yuan, up 24.6 percent year on year and accounting for 33.4 percent of the total retail sales of consumer goods.
