BEIJING, July 9 (Xinhua) -- The database industry in China has entered a period of great development opportunities, reported Economic Information Daily Thursday quoting a report released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) recently.
The rapid development of the network information industry and the in-depth deployment of new infrastructure have provided a sound environment for the accelerated development of China's database industry.
According to the estimate of CAICT, a scientific research institute directly under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), China's database market in 2020 was approximately 24.1 billion yuan in size, accounting for 5.2 percent of the global database market, and by 2025, the figure may grow to 68.8 billion yuan with a compound annual growth rate of 23.4 percent.
China's information technology (IT) expenditure in 2020 accounted for about 12 percent of the world's total, while China's database market scale accounted for about 0.9 percent of its IT expenditure, indicating that China's database market still boasts large development potential, said Wei Kai, deputy director of the Cloud Computing and Big Data Research Institute with CAICT.
For a long time, China's database services were mainly provided by application developers and hardware service providers in the form of subsidiary skills. As databases become more and more important to enterprises, they have increasingly urgent demands for database-centered professional services, and independent database service vendors have begun to emerge and formed specialized sub-fields of services.
According to the report by CAICT, the current database service market in China mainly focuses on finance, telecommunications, government affairs, manufacturing and transportation, with each field accounting for 22.3 percent, 18.9 percent, 16.4 percent, 13.3 percent and 9.6 percent of the market share, respectively.
As cloud computing gradually matures, the market share of cloud databases has expanded rapidly. CAICT's report shows that China's public cloud database market was 10.768 billion yuan in 2020, and the compound annual growth rate of the market may reach 36.1 percent in the next five years and exceed 50 billion yuan by 2025.
China's database integrated application capabilities continue to deepen, with innovative application scenarios and excellent database solutions in key areas such as finance, telecommunications, government affairs, manufacturing, and the internet emerging swiftly, and innovations related to artificial intelligence, new hardware, blockchain, and other technologies are spawning new database design patterns, breaking the boundaries of traditional database functions, said Wei.
